I was born and raised in South Africa and my early work was shaped by the colours and textures of the varied cultural influences I was exposed to, in my young life. I was lucky enough to attend the Music, Art & Ballet School of Pretoria where my art instructors taught me the technical skills to translate my interpretation of the world around me.
HOW DID I GET HERE?
My first job was working as a screen printer. The attention to detail was good for me but I needed to create my own work. On a whim, I studied Stained Glass and Tiffany work, got my Diploma and promptly opened a studio. Mastering the rigidity of the form, I found a way to solder on glass and was featured in SA Garden & Home. I was commissioned to do many pieces for clients who brought in a photo for me to reproduce in glass. This wasn't a 'lamp and lightcatcher' studio.
The advent of computer graphics opened a new door for me, and my career as a Graphic Artist started. Throw in a Diploma in Journalism along the way, and my business, and creative concept writing took precedence over creating visual art for many years.
Canada, opened the world up for me. I began working in Film and Television and my role as a Producer enabled me to travel and be introduced to cultures I never dreamed possible. It's those influences that have shaped the colours and textures I now explore with my new work.
STYLE
Some of my pieces are still representative of my earlier style, using the stained glass influence but with paint. Sometimes it's freeing to go back to comfort - when a piece just wants to have a definition. I don't plan or presketch anything. Paint has a mind of its own and I let it do its thing.
My new 2021 collection is far more interpretive, intuitive and expressionistic than I've ever let myself be. I love watching a piece come together. Sometimes, it's alchemical and sometimes, I need the paint to 'move' more than it's willing. That's when the dimensions are created.
MEDIUMS
My entire work is dedicated to how my work reacts to light. My originals which are mostly acrylic on framed canvas, also have layers of pigments, mica powders, alcohol ink, resin, gold and silver leaf, gold pen and whatever else speaks to me in the studio. I'm also not beyond using house paint as a robust medium.
COLLABORATION & COMMISSIONS
I have been fortunate to have sold many of my originals in my journey as an artist. If you like what you see and think you would like something that reflects your personality in a different shape or colour, I'm here to create.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
